Presentation - Sharing on New School Facilities - By Joyce Lee (2P)
Good morning, Principal, the honorable guests, teachers and my fellow schoolmates. My name is Joyce and I'm from Class 2P. It is my pleasure to be given an opportunity to share with you the joy of reading.
During the Chinese New Year holiday, Have you read any books? As a Chinese, I have chosen to read a book written by one of the most influential scholars of ancient China. Do you know who he is? Yes, he is Confucius and the book is called "The Analects of Confucius", that is 論語 in Chinese.
This book mainly contains the words and deeds of Confucius and his disciples. It embodies Confucius's political ideas, ethics, moral concepts and principles of education which has inspired me a lot. This book has taught me a lot about moral, self-cultivation, life truth and how to be a better person.
Moreover, this book contains a lot of quotes that are applicable to our life and study, like “lack of patience in small matters will bring destruction to overall plans” (小不忍則亂大謀) , “people of different moral convictions cannot get along” (道不同不相為謀) and “what you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others” ( 己所不欲，勿施於人), etc., to name but a few.
As a student, I think learning and studying require a lot of practices and skills. This book has instilled various principles to me so that it enables my problem-solving skills. Like what the book says “Is it not pleasant to learn with persistent application?' (學而時習之，不亦說乎).
I feel very proud to be a member of Queen Maud Secondary School. My school has just established a new library on the 1st floor a few months ago. It is called the Reading Paradise. I think it is very convenient especially for junior form students to borrow books instead of going up to the 7th floor. It motivates me to read more. Also, I could find books of a variety of genres. The Russian novelist, Leo Tolstoy has said that “ideal books are the key to wisdom” (and the American novelist, Emilie Poulsson has also said that “books are keys to wisdom's treasure; books are gates to lands of pleasure; books are paths that upward lead; books are friends. Come, let us read”). I'm sure more and more students will benefit from the new school facilities.
For my reading habit, I do it on a regular basis as I regard it as a way to release my study pressure. In the school curriculum, there is a reading lesson offered to us once a cycle, so I will also read some books during the lesson. Sometimes I will put down my reflections on the book report and on the blog so that more students will understand the joy of reading.
I hope your mind and soul can be stimulated and nurtured through the process of reading. I'm looking forward to exchange the ideas of a book that we have read in the near future.
Thank you very much.
